How to Find the Perfect Cake Shop..
When it comes to party planning, selecting the perfect birthday cake is about as important as choosing the party theme and finding your venue, and it’s usually high up on the list of things to do in your party planning checklist. Birthday cakes have been a staple of celebrations since the 1400s, originating from German bakeries that marketed them for children’s parties. Today, whether you are a seasoned pro in the party planning scene or a newbie looking for guidance, our suggestions and tips are designed to ensure that the birthday cake at your next event is everything you need… and more.
- Research Local Cake Shops
Although we have done 90% of the work for you by curating the list above of our favourite Cake Shops in your City, I can highly recommend using our guide to have an in-depth look through each of the Bakeries in your area. Check their reviews, browse through their images on their Socials and Google Business pages and ideally find a shop that has already worked on your party theme in the past. - Order in Advance
There aren’t many good bakeries that can provide a next-day or even same-week delivery of a customised cake for your party. Get your order in at least 2 weeks prior to your party date for custom designs. And if the Cake Shop you are working with is popular we recommend contacting them around 4 – 6 weeks in advance. - Taste Test
Perhaps the best part of picking the Cake flavours is the taste test, most bakeries offer this service and it’s a fantastic way to help you decide on the perfect flavours for the special day. Plus.. Who doesn’t love free cake? - Dietary restrictions
I have found that in almost every group of Children at a party there are a couple that have dietary restrictions. My recommendation (if you don’t already have this information) is to ask everyone about dietary restrictions when you send out the invites. Also keep in mind that you most likely won’t be able to cater to everyone (unless you are willing to get 3 – 4 cakes), so working with the majority in mind is usually best practise. A bakery I worked with last year was able to create a cake for us that was one half gluten free and one half regular, so it is also an option.. But not every Baker is going to be so accommodating. - Delivery and Setup
To avoid rushing around on the big day (unless that’s your thing), discuss with the Bakery their delivery options. If possible schedule the cake to arrive at least 3 hours before the party commences and make plenty of space in your fridge beforehand. - Budget
I usually set a budget for our Birthday cake in advance and stick to it, prices can range from $50 – $1000 depending on the complexity and design of the themed cake and the exclusivity of the Cake Shop. Be sure to get the price upfront so the only surprise on the day is the size of the cake… Not the bill.
