Party Shops in Austin: Where to Buy Supplies

Austin still has proper party shops, and they are worth protecting.

3 hand-picked Austin spots

The east-side piñata trade in particular is a genuine local institution and a shrinking one — several long-running shops on and around East Cesar Chavez have closed or been redeveloped in recent years. The ones still trading are the real thing rather than a chain approximation, and they are the reason a party here can look better than one assembled from a supermarket aisle.

Checked in July 2026. We have left off the chains: Party City filed for Chapter 11 in December 2024 and closed its stores through early 2025, so an older guide pointing you at one is out of date.

Piñata Party Palace

2902 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702

A long-standing independent on East Cesar Chavez, and the place to go when you want a handmade piñata rather than a flat-packed one. The stock runs to a proper range of styles and sizes, and the quality difference against a mass-produced piñata is obvious the moment you pick one up.

East Austin's piñata shops have had a hard decade — rising rents and redevelopment have taken several of them — so this is one to use rather than admire from a distance. Alongside the piñatas they carry the wider party-supply range, including things to fill them with.

Over the Top Cake Supplies

9070 Research Blvd, Ste 203, Austin, TX 78758

Not a general party shop, and that is exactly why it is here. If any part of your plan involves a cake you are making yourself, this is the specialist: tins, tips, boards, colours, toppers, and the sort of stock that turns an ambitious idea into something achievable.

It is up on Research Boulevard in north Austin rather than central, and it is the trip you make when the cake is the centrepiece. Staff know the products, which matters when you have watched a video and are not entirely sure what you actually need to buy.

Soco Partyland

A family-run party store carrying authentic Mexican candy, piñatas, and the practical end of party hire — tables, chairs and moonwalks — under one roof.

That combination is the useful bit: for a garden party of any size you usually need seating and something for the children to bounce on as well as the decorations, and doing it in one conversation beats three. Worth a call to confirm current stock and rental availability before you plan around it.

A note on East Austin's piñata shops

The piñata shops along East Cesar Chavez are one of the city's genuine local trades, and several of the long-running ones have closed or been demolished as the area has been redeveloped. It has been covered in the local press as a gentrification story, and it is a real one.

The practical consequence for anyone planning a party: check a shop is still trading before you drive out, and if you find a good one, use it. Older guides — including our own previous version of this page, which recommended a Party City that no longer exists — go stale quickly here.

Planning the shop

Piñata first, everything else after. It is the item with a lead time if you want something specific, and the one most likely to need a phone call.

If you are making the cake, treat Over the Top as a separate trip rather than a stop on the way. It is in north Austin and it is a shop you browse rather than dash through.

Buy helium balloons on the day of the party. In an Austin summer they fare even worse overnight than they do elsewhere.

Not as a standalone store. Party City filed for Chapter 11 in December 2024 and closed its corporate-owned stores through early 2025; the brand was bought by Ad Populum and has been returning inside Staples locations. Any guide still sending you to an Austin Party City is out of date.
