The chains have thinned out everywhere — Party City went through Chapter 11 in December 2024 and closed its stores through early 2025 — which leaves the independents doing the work they always did. In Seattle that is a short list, but a strong one.
Both of these are physical storefronts you can walk into, checked in July 2026. We have left off the supermarket party aisles and the online-only sellers: useful, but not what you need on the Friday before a Saturday party.

Seattle's serious party shop, and it has been doing this for the better part of ninety years — an independent, family-owned business that has outlasted every chain that tried to compete with it.
Balloons, party supplies, costumes and accessories, with the range and the staff knowledge that only comes from decades of stock decisions. This is the shop for the awkward request: a specific colour, an unusual size, the thing you cannot find anywhere else. It sits in Georgetown, south of downtown, with parking that does not require a strategy.

The piñata shop. Sonya keeps every size in stock and takes custom requests, which is the thing the big retailers stopped doing years ago — if the birthday child wants a specific character or colour, this is where you ask.
It is out in White Center, south-west of the city, and it rewards a phone call before you drive: a custom build needs lead time, and knowing whether what you want is on the shelf saves the trip. Alongside the piñatas there is the rest of the party-shop stock to fill them with.
Where the chain stores went
Party City filed for Chapter 11 in December 2024 and wound down its corporate-owned stores through early 2025. The brand was later bought by Ad Populum and has been reappearing as a section inside Staples stores rather than as standalone shops.
So the old reflex — drive to the party store on the way home — needs updating. Check a chain location is actually trading before you set off, and treat the two independents above as the plan rather than the backup.
Getting it done in one trip
Order the piñata first. It is the only item on a party list with a genuine lead time, especially if you want it custom, and everything else can be bought the same week.
Buy helium balloons on the day, not the day before. They lose height overnight and a sagging arch on the morning of the party is a poor start.
Take the theme with you, written down. Both shops can dress a generic birthday from stock; a specific character either exists on the shelf or it does not, and finding out in person is worth the trip.
