Kids Party Venues in Detroit: 10 Great Spots

Note the name before you search for it. This is the old Detroit Science Center, which went dark in 2011 and reopened at the end of 2012 under a new nonprofit as the Michigan Science Center — Mi-Sci locally. It is the one venue here actually in the city, on John R Street in Midtown, with 220-plus hands-on exhibits, a planetarium and the Chrysler IMAX Dome.

Parties are written for children twelve and under and run Saturdays and Sundays only. Every package covers general admission for the whole guest list plus reserved party space; upper tiers add a private hands-on session with a Mi-Sci educator — slime chemistry, LEGO engineering, or a build-and-race vehicle activity. Groups over forty can attract an event-space fee, so count the adults.

Twenty-odd miles north in Bloomfield Hills, on the Cranbrook campus, and a genuinely handsome museum rather than a hall of buttons — dinosaur skeletons, a mineral hall, a bug room, a planetarium and an observatory, in grounds you can walk afterwards.

Parties come in three shapes: staff-led, self-guided, or the planetarium-based Galactic option, with themes running from dinosaurs and insects through geology to a guided nature walk. It beats the Midtown science center for the child who wants real fossils rather than interactive screens, though the drive from the eastern suburbs is long enough to matter. Book through the form on their site and start early — the party calendar works around the museum's own programme.

Tucked inside Great Lakes Crossing Outlets at Entrance 7 in Auburn Hills, which sounds like a mark against it and is not: parking is free and endless, and there is somewhere for the adults to go afterwards. Themed zones, a touch pool of crabs, lobsters and sea urchins, and a walk-through tunnel that reliably shuts a room of children up.

The standard package gives everyone aquarium admission plus an hour in a private party room with a host, paper goods, and a cookie and juice per child. Step up a tier and the room time goes to ninety minutes, you can bring your own pizza in, and the shark mascot appears for a private meet-and-greet. It lands best somewhere between four and nine.

A few hundred yards up Baldwin Road from SEA LIFE, in the same Auburn Hills mall complex — rides, 4D films, build zones and a Miniland of Detroit landmarks in brick. It aims at two to twelve, and in practice is strongest under ten.

The party room takes up to forty-five guests and comes with a dedicated host. Three tiers: an hour with cookies and juice at the base, ninety minutes with pizza in the middle, and at the top a take-home LEGO keychain build for every guest plus a private costume-character meet-and-greet. One hard rule to plan around — a party needs at least fifteen people including ten children — so a small, tight guest list does not work here.

Out west in Canton, and the clear answer for the under-eights. Four thousand square feet of deliberately screen-free play — a climbing structure, a separate baby space, a sensory room, a nursing room and a reading nook — behind sound-dampening walls, which any parent who has served an hour in a soft-play barn will recognize as the load-bearing detail.

Private parties take the whole room at a flat hire rate rather than a per-child package, which changes the arithmetic entirely if you are inviting a class; it holds up to 120. Nought to eight is the honest band, and a nine-year-old will be bored inside ten minutes. Decor, face painting and catering are add-ons arranged through them.

The Macomb County entry, out on Hall Road, and a good deal more than a trampoline park. Alongside the performance trampolines and dodgeball courts there is a ropes course, a Leap of Faith platform, climbing walls, two kinds of bumper cars, a Sky Rider indoor zip line, a tumble track and a warrior obstacle course.

The reason to choose it over a plain jump park is that spread: a mixed guest list of six- and eleven-year-olds will not run out of things to do in the first forty minutes. There is a tubes playground for the smallest guests, which is the usual weak spot at venues like this. Check what this particular park has before you promise anyone the ropes course.
