What’s different about four
Four-year-olds are pretenders. Give them wings, a hard hat or a cape and the party mostly runs itself, because the game is already in their heads. That is why dress-up themes like fairies, dinosaurs, princesses and superheroes do so well at this age, and why a costume station at the door is worth more than a long list of activities.
Turn-taking has arrived, but patience has not quite caught up with it. Games with a short line and a quick turn, like a bean bag toss or pin the tail, work better than ones where a child waits a long time to go. Keep a soft-exit version of every elimination game ready, and use it the moment someone starts to wobble.
Lead with dress-up
A costume box or a crown-making table gives early arrivals something to do, and gets every guest into the theme before the first game starts.
Short lines, fast turns
A four-year-old will wait for a turn, but not for long. Split a big group into two lines or two stations so nobody stands still for more than a moment.
Losing still stings
Rules make sense at four; losing doesn’t yet. Cheer trying as loudly as winning, and give the first child out a job, like running the music, rather than a seat on the side.
Shows start to land
Four is the bottom of the range that magic shows and clowns list for themselves. Tell the performer the ages coming, so the routine is pitched at the youngest guests rather than the oldest.
