What’s different about five
Five-year-olds arrive ready to play. Most of the games everyone half-remembers from their own childhood are pitched almost exactly at this age, and a five-year-old can follow one from start to finish without an adult steering every round.
The thing to plan for is the mix. Energy at five comes in bursts, so a party that is all running or all sitting comes apart the same way: either nobody can sit still for the cake, or a roomful of children who have sat too long invents its own entertainment. Alternate a chase, a circle game and something with a line and a turn to wait for.
Alternate run-around and sit-down
Pick one game from each pile and swap between them. At five, the rhythm of the afternoon matters more than which games you choose.
Elimination works, with a back-up
Elimination games work at five more often than at three or four. Keep a soft-exit version ready for the child who is out first and starting to crumble.
Fix duck duck goose before you start
Agree that the tapper goes all the way around the circle before choosing anyone twice, or the quiet child at the end of the row never gets a turn.
Most themes run both halves
Many themes have a younger half and an older half of games. At five you can usually run both: the gentle ones early, the louder ones after the cake.
